Tanzania is the only travel location on this site that has more than one page of images. That’s in part because it was my most recent trip and because, quite frankly, it was stunning and I wanted to share as many pictures as possible! I’m really glad I got to see this sort of world at least once in my life.
In June my wife Sandy and I, along with our friend Vicky from Seattle, went to Tanzania for a non-shooting safari. A big part of the planning for this trip was organized around being able to see the “great migration,” something that I believe happens at this scale only in Africa. The images I was able to make of this event are only a small fraction of the full migration, made up of about 2 million Wildebeest, along with thousands of zebra and antelope. (see Serengeti Day 3 for some shots of this.)
The following galleries are a mostly chronological sampling of what we saw while in Tanzania. We visited Lake Manyara, Ngorogoro Crater, and the Serengeti and Rubondo Island National Parks. Each of these places have their own array of wildlife, which broadly speaking have become almost completely habituated to humans. They go about their daily activities with virtually no fear, and frankly little regard, other than sometimes turning to look at the people poking their heads out of safari vehicles with cameras and binoculars, even as we are making excited exclamations. Here people are mostly just a nuisance to the primary inhabitants.
As a caption on some photographs I have noted the longitude and latitude of the general location so that you can google earth it, if you’re interested. It may be the only way you could find some of these places.
Note: Unlike most of the other images on this site, almost all of the Tanzania photos were made with a 75-300mm lens I rented. It would not have been the same trip without it. Shoutout to LensRentals in Cordova, TN for having this lens available and for being completely dependable and reliable in all my dealings with them - even when I had to cancel the original order due to the pandemic. Great people to deal with.
